Here, Dr. Belmont shares some signs that it may be a good time for you to undergo laser vision correction with LASIK.
YOU ARE TIRED OF THE INCONVENIENCES OF VISUAL AIDS
The first sign that you are ready for LASIK is that you want to get rid of your glasses and/or contact lenses. If you’ve worn visual aids for years, you are probably familiar with inconveniences like losing a contact lens, falling asleep with your contacts in or trying to sip a hot beverage without fogging up your glasses. By reducing or eliminating your dependence on vision aids, LASIK allows you to go through life without these small annoyances.
YOU WANT TO GET UP AND GO
Maybe you feel as though contacts or glasses interfere with your life and prevent you from playing sports or participating in other activities you enjoy. Perhaps they make it difficult to take a spontaneous road trip or pack for an extended vacation. Vision correction with LASIK allows you to “get up and go” without stopping to worry about visual aids.
YOU ARE AT LEAST 18 YEARS OLD AND YOUR VISION IS STABLE
LASIK is FDA-approved for individuals over the age of 18. Most LASIK surgeons ask that your vision is stable, meaning your prescription hasn’t changed for at least six months prior to surgery. This prevents you from having LASIK and then requiring retreatment in the future because your prescription was unstable.
YOU ARE IN GOOD GENERAL HEALTH
During your LASIK screening, you will be evaluated to assess whether your eyes are in good health and to make sure you do not currently have dry eye, an active eye infection or any other problems that could pose problems. You also should not be pregnant or nursing at the time you undergo surgery.
YOU ARE READY TO INVEST IN YOURSELF
LASIK is considered elective, and most insurance companies do not offer coverage. An important part of preparing for the surgery is thinking about how you will pay for it.
