That sharp, gritty feeling in your eye can stop you in your tracks. Whether it’s dust, an eyelash, or a speck from city air, getting something stuck in your eye can be both painful and alarming. Your first instinct might be to rub your eye—but that’s often the worst thing you can do.

Don’t Rub—Blink Instead

Rubbing your eye can scratch the cornea (the clear front surface), leading to irritation or even infection. Instead, blink several times to encourage your tears to naturally flush out the irritant. If that doesn’t help, move on to a gentle rinse.

Rinse Carefully and Safely

Use clean, lukewarm water or sterile saline solution to flush your eye. You can do this in the shower or with an eye-wash station. Avoid directly using tap water when possible—it can contain microorganisms that may irritate the eye.

Know When to See an Eye Doctor

If you experience any of the following, stop trying to remove the object yourself and seek immediate medical care:

  • Persistent pain or a scratching sensation

  • Redness or swelling that doesn’t subside

  • Blurry or decreased vision

  • The feeling that something is still in your eye after rinsing

At Belmont Eye Center in New York City, our board-certified ophthalmologist uses advanced imaging and precision instruments to locate and safely remove any debris. Even a minor irritation can cause long-term issues if left untreated.

Prevent It Before It Happens

The best way to protect your eyes is by wearing safety glasses or goggles during yard work, home repairs, or when exposed to dust, sand, or other airborne particles. Sunglasses can also help shield your eyes from debris and UV light on windy days.
