If you’ve been told you have astigmatism, you might think you’re disqualified from LASIK—but that’s not necessarily true. In fact, millions of people with astigmatism have successfully had LASIK and now enjoy clear, glasses-free vision.
Let’s clear the fog and break down the biggest myths surrounding LASIK and astigmatism in 2025.
First, What Is Astigmatism?
Astigmatism happens when the cornea (the front surface of the eye) is irregularly shaped—more like a football than a basketball. This leads to distorted or blurred vision at all distances because light doesn’t focus evenly on the retina.
Astigmatism is extremely common—and most people have it to some degree.
Myth #1: “LASIK Can’t Treat Astigmatism”
Reality: LASIK absolutely can correct astigmatism—especially with today’s advanced laser technology.
During LASIK, the laser reshapes your cornea to make it more symmetrical, allowing light to focus correctly. This works for astigmatism just as it does for nearsightedness or farsightedness.
In fact, many of our patients at Belmont Eye Center specifically seek LASIK because they have astigmatism and are tired of relying on glasses or toric contact lenses.
Myth #2: “My Astigmatism Is Too Severe for LASIK”
Reality: LASIK is FDA-approved to treat up to 6 diopters of astigmatism, which covers the majority of cases.
However, if your astigmatism is very high or irregular, you may need a more customized solution—like topography-guided LASIK, PRK, or even refractive lens exchange. The only way to know for sure is through a detailed consultation with a laser vision specialist.
Myth #3: “The Results Don’t Last for Astigmatism”
Reality: LASIK results are typically long-lasting for patients with astigmatism. The procedure is permanent—but your eyes can still naturally change with age, especially after 40.
In rare cases, a small touch-up (called an enhancement) may be needed—but that’s true for any LASIK patient, not just those with astigmatism.
Are You a Good LASIK Candidate with Astigmatism?
You may be a candidate if:
-
Your prescription is stable and within the treatable range
-
Your corneas are healthy and thick enough for laser reshaping
-
You are free of eye diseases or severe dry eye
-
You are over 18 and in overall good health
The good news? Many patients with mild to moderate astigmatism qualify. Even if LASIK isn’t the right fit, there are great alternatives we can discuss.
What About Alternatives Like PRK or SMILE?
Some patients with high or irregular astigmatism may be better suited for:
-
PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy) – great for thin corneas
-
SMILE (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction) – a newer, minimally invasive laser procedure
-
ICLs or Lens Replacement – ideal for higher prescriptions or age-related vision changes
At Belmont Eye Center, we tailor each vision correction plan to you.
