Summer is an exciting season that provides plenty of opportunity to enjoy the outdoors. However, the hot weather can take a toll on the eyes. Before you soak up the sun this summer, learn what you can do to keep your eyes happy and healthy all season long.
WEAR THE RIGHT SUNGLASSES
Your skin isn’t the only thing at risk for sunburn. Long hours under the sun’s harmful UV rays can burn the corneas, which are the transparent layer on the front of the eyes. Unprotected sun exposure over time can also increase your risk of certain eye conditions such as cataracts and macular degeneration. Wearing sunglasses that offer 100 percent UVA and UVB protection can go a long way to protecting your eyes from the sun. Wraparound sunglasses with large frames offer the most protection. Keep in mind that you are still at risk of a sunburn during overcast weather, so wearing sunglasses year round is a must.
PROTECT YOUR EYES WHILE PLAYING SPORTS
Each year, thousands of people visit the emergency room due to eye injuries, many of which are linked to sports. Wearing protective goggles can drastically reduce your risk of an eye injury. Anti-fog lenses that have 100 percent UV protection are ideal for sports such as softball and soccer. If you plan on swimming, be sure to wear a pair of good-fitting goggles to protect your eyes from chemicals, bacteria and other irritants that may be present in the water. If you wear contacts, be sure to always take them out before swimming.
TRAVEL SMART
If you’re planning on taking a trip this summer, be sure to pack the necessary items to keep your eyes happy. Pack two pairs of sunglasses. If you wear prescription glasses, bring an extra pair (or contacts) on your trip in case you lose or break a pair. If you use prescription eye drops, bring an extra bottle. If you’re traveling by plane, guard your eyes from dry eye. Pack over-the-counter eye drops for extra lubrication and take out contacts on overnight flights. Be sure to have your eye doctor’s contact information, in case of any emergency.
TIRED OF WEARING GLASSES OR CONTACTS?
If you are tired of relying on glasses or contacts for clear vision, it’s time to consider laser vision correction. Talk to Dr. Belmont about how LASIK can help restore your vision and improve your quality of life. Schedule a one-on-one consultation by calling Belmont Eye Center at (212) 486-2020.
