How To Choose A Lasik Surgeon in NYC

At the Belmont Eye Center, we recognize that eyesight is a precious asset and that choosing a LASIK surgeon in NYC to perform your laser vision correction procedure is a very important decision. You need an ophthalmologist that is well trained, has extensive experience, and comes highly recommended by doctors and patients. With so many Lasik surgeons to choose from, how do you know which one to trust with your vision?

To help you make this critical decision, here are some important factors to keep in mind when choosing your PRK surgeon or Lasik surgeon in NYC.

Training And Accreditation

First, make sure that the LASIK surgeon you choose to perform your procedure has advanced training in ophthalmology and specializes in corneal and refractive surgery. Your LASIK surgeon should of course be certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology (ABO) and accredited by respected organizations in the field of ophthalmology (ex. The American Academy of Ophthalmology, or AAO) and general surgery (ex. Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, or F.A.C.S.).

New York City LASIK surgeon Sandra Belmont, M.D., F.A.C.S. is all of the above. After finishing her medical degree and extensive training in ophthalmology, Dr. Belmont completed an advanced training fellowship in corneal and refractive surgery under the tutelage of Dr. Richard C. Troutman at the prestigious Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital. She then went on to Cornell Medical center where she trained future corneal specialists in her own highly competitive corneal fellowship program. She is certified by the ABO and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

Experience

Your LASIK NYC surgeon should have significant experience — you do not want to be one of your surgeon’s first LASIK patients.

Dr. Belmont has been treating Manhattan LASIK patients for more than 25 years. She has performed tens of thousands of vision correction procedures on a variety of patients, from pilots to doctors, celebrities to dignitaries. Dr. Belmont was one of the first eye doctors in the U.S. to collaborate with the FDA to study the safety and efficacy of the excimer laser for refractive eye surgery. She is a clinical associate professor of ophthalmology and Director of the Resident Refractive Surgical Education Program at the New York University School of Medicine and has surgical privileges at both of New York’s preeminent eye specialty hospitals, Manhattan Eye Ear and Throat Hospital and the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary.

Technology

With the ever-evolving advancements in the laser technology used during LASIK surgery, you want to be sure that the laser eye surgeon you choose uses only the most advanced, precise technology available.

At Belmont Eye Center, we utilize the most advanced laser technology on the market: the VISX STAR S4 IR wavefront-guided laser platform for customized vision correction as well as the WaveLight Allegretto Wave Eye-Q laser. Depending on each patient’s unique eye anatomy and surgical objectives, Dr. Belmont recommends the most appropriate option.

Patient Satisfaction

Finally, your chosen laser eye surgeon should come highly recommended by doctors and patients who are thrilled with their results.

Widely considered one of New York’s leading Lasik Surgeon in NYC, Dr. Belmont is highly sought after for her LASIK expertise and great knowledge of all types of laser vision correction surgery. Trusted above others by doctors wanting to undergo LASIK, PRK, or other laser vision correction procedures, she is the doctor of choice for the scientists and engineers who helped to develop the excimer laser for refractive eye surgery, as well as notable celebrities. Dr. Belmont’s laser vision correction procedures on Regis Philbin and ‘The Tonight Show’ host, Jimmy Fallon were nationally broadcast. Her corneal transplants on Mandy Patinkin, star of cable tv’s ‘Homeland’ were part of his inspiration to become a spokesman for The Eye Bank for Sight Restoration, of which Dr. Belmont serves as a member of its medical advisory board. Friends, family and tens of thousands of patients from all walks of life steadfastly agree with Jimmy Fallon in proclaiming, “Doctor Belmont, you are the greatest!”

Lasik Consultation / Prk

Prior to your first visit, patients should:

  • Discontinue use of soft contact lenses for at least 3days prior to your appointment
  • Discontinue use of toric, gas permeable and hard contact lenses for at least one week prior to your appointment
  • Remember to write down any questions that you might have
  • Bring all relevant medical information along with you
  • Bring sunglasses if possible. Your pupils will usually be dilated during your initial examination; it may be difficult to read fine print for a few hours afterward. On a nice sunny day, sunglasses should be used to protect your eyes.

The initial visit is a comprehensive eye exam to insure that you will be a good candidate for laser vision correction and rule out any matters that may prevent you from having laser vision correction. Computerized diagnostic instruments will be used to identify unique imperfections in each eye, map the topography of the corneas and very precisely measure the thickness of your corneas. As with our fingerprints, no two eyes are exactly alike; by performing this diagnostic analysis, the laser can deliver a treatment that is uniquely customized to your own needs.

During your comprehensive exam, Dr. Belmont will discuss her findings and the exam with you, and suggest a treatment plan that is best suited to your needs. She will explain what the treatment entails and answer all of your questions. She will explain that patients feel no sensation during the procedure but may recommend a mild sedative to help you relax on the day of your treatment. Post-operative instructions will be provided and medicated eye drops will be prescribed. You will be instructed accordingly and asked to bring whatever medications you may need with you on the day of your treatment. If you do not qualify for laser vision correction, other options will be discussed.
