LASIK Education & News

LASIK eye surgery is one of the most popular elective procedures in the world—with over 700,000 Americans opting in each year. But if you’re considering LASIK, one of the first questions you might ask is: Am I the right age?

Let’s break down what the ideal age range is for LASIK, and when you might want to wait—or explore other options.

How Young Is Too Young for LASIK?

Most eye surgeons won’t perform LASIK on anyone under 18, and for good reason:
Your eyes are still changing. Vision can fluctuate significantly during the teen years and even into early adulthood.

Ideal minimum age: 21 years old
By your early 20s, your prescription should be stable—which is essential for a successful, long-lasting LASIK outcome.

You might be too young if:

  • Your vision prescription has changed in the last 12 months

  • You’re pregnant or planning to be (hormones can impact vision)

  • You have a history of eye infections, trauma, or certain autoimmune conditions

Tip: If you’re in your early 20s, make sure your prescription hasn’t changed for at least a year before pursuing LASIK.

How Old Is Too Old for LASIK?

There’s technically no upper age limit for LASIK—but the best candidates typically fall between 21 and 55 years old.

After age 55, eye health issues like cataracts, glaucoma, or macular degeneration may reduce your eligibility for LASIK or change which procedure is recommended.

That said, many patients in their 60s or even 70s can still be candidates—especially if they’re in good health and have clear lenses.

You might be too old for LASIK if:

  • You’ve developed cataracts (you may be a better fit for lens replacement surgery)

  • You have uncontrolled diabetes or other degenerative eye conditions

  • You’ve had major vision changes recently

So, What’s the Best Age for LASIK?

Most LASIK patients fall in the 25 to 45 age range. That’s when:

  • Your prescription is stable

  • Your corneal thickness is still optimal

  • You haven’t developed age-related conditions like cataracts

Still, every eye is unique. The most important factor isn’t just your age—it’s whether your eyes are healthy and stable enough for surgery.
